Drums on the Basketball Court

Drums on the Basketball Court

As you’re probably aware, basketball is a big thing in Shanghai because of NBA superstar Yao Ming. Because of this, the city has built basketball courts in many of the city’s parks, and they are packed during daytime with kids shooting some hoops. There is one such court in the park in front of my bus stop, where I take the bus to work every morning.

Today, however, the court was packed with different people: men and women standing solemnly while a traditional drum troupe was playing. I guess the flat, open surfaces are in hot demand, and the kids just didn’t have a word in the matter… A few of them lingered outside the court, dribbling sadly, and left, dejected.
